Ascension Day in Finland, known as Helatorstai, is a national public holiday that falls on a Thursday forty days after Easter. The holiday is warmly welcomed as it creates a potential four-day weekend, with many Finns taking the Friday off. It arrives during one of the most beautiful periods of the Finnish year, when spring is in full bloom after the long dark winter.

Religious observance includes services in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, which is the country's largest religious denomination. However, Helatorstai has become primarily a secular holiday associated with spring activities and the approach of summer.

The timing of Helatorstai in late May or early June coincides with a magical period in Finland. Traditional activities include fishing, as lake ice has finally melted across most of the country, gardening, with Finns planting their summer flowers and vegetables, and enjoying the first barbecues and terrace dining of the season. Saunas by lakesides, berry picking (though the season is just beginning), and birding during the spring migration are popular pastimes. The holiday carries a sense of joyful anticipation for the Finnish summer ahead.
