Nochevieja in Spain is defined by one iconic ritual: las doce uvas de la suerte (the twelve lucky grapes). At midnight, Spaniards eat one grape with each of the twelve bell strikes from the Puerta del Sol clock in Madrid. The challenge is to finish all twelve before the last chime fades, which is harder than it sounds given the quick succession of the bells.

The Puerta del Sol countdown is broadcast live on Televisión Espanola, and nearly every Spaniard watches, grape packet in hand. The tradition began in 1909, reportedly as a clever marketing campaign by grape growers in Alicante who had a surplus harvest. Today, supermarkets sell special peeled and seedless grape tins specifically for the occasion.

Before midnight, families gather for a late dinner (typically starting around 9 or 10 PM) featuring seafood, roast lamb or suckling pig, and an array of embutidos (cured meats). After the grapes, the night shifts to cotillón parties at hotels, restaurants, or nightclubs, with many Spaniards celebrating until dawn.

In Barcelona, the celebrations focus on Placa d'Espanya and the Magic Fountain. Madrid's Puerta del Sol fills with thousands of revellers, while smaller cities and pueblos hold their own charm with local fiestas. Wearing red underwear for good luck and gold jewellery for wealth rounds out the Spanish New Year's Eve customs.

The last day of the Gregorian calendar year, celebrated worldwide with countdown parties, fireworks, and midnight toasts welcoming the new year.
