Swedish Christmas, or Jul, begins with the first Sunday of Advent and builds to a crescendo on December 24, Julafton (Christmas Eve), which is the main celebration day. One of the most beloved pre-Christmas traditions is December 13, Saint Lucia's Day, when a girl wearing a crown of candles leads a procession singing Sankta Lucia, bringing light during the darkest time of year.

The Julbord, or Christmas buffet, is the culinary highlight. This elaborate spread includes julskinka (Christmas ham glazed with mustard and breadcrumbs), gravlax (cured salmon), pickled herring in multiple preparations, Jansson's temptation (a creamy anchovy-potato gratin), meatballs, prinskorv (small sausages), and an assortment of cheeses. The rice pudding, risgrynsgrot, is served with a single almond hidden inside, and whoever finds it is said to marry within the year.

At three o'clock on Christmas Eve, virtually the entire nation tunes in to watch Kalle Anka och hans vanner (Donald Duck and Friends), a Disney special that has aired since 1959. This tradition is so deeply ingrained that any suggestion of canceling it provokes national outrage.

The Julbock (Yule Goat) is a distinctive Swedish decoration made of straw, and the giant Gavle Goat erected each year in the city of Gavle is famous for its history of being set ablaze by vandals. Tomtar (gnomes) are another iconic symbol, believed to guard the homestead during winter.
