Eid al-Adha in Nigeria, known as Eid el-Kabir or Babbar Sallah in Hausa, is one of the two most important Muslim celebrations in the country and is observed as a two-day national public holiday. The celebration is most vibrant in northern Nigeria, where the Hausa-Fulani Muslim population predominates, but is observed by Muslim communities nationwide.

The Durbar parade in Kano is the highlight of Eid al-Adha celebrations. Thousands of horsemen in flowing robes and turbans, accompanied by camel riders and musicians, parade before the Emir of Kano in a display of feudal pageantry that has continued for centuries. The Emir rides on horseback under a massive umbrella, and the crowd cheers as each district's contingent passes. Similar Durbars take place in Katsina, Zaria, and Bauchi.

The sacrifice is central to the celebration. Families sacrifice rams, goats, or cattle, with the meat divided and distributed according to Islamic tradition. In wealthy families, multiple animals are sacrificed. The traditional northern Nigerian preparation includes suya, kilishi, and tsire, spiced grilled meats that fill the air with an irresistible aroma. Rice jollof, tuwo, and various soups accompany the meat.

The celebration bridges communities. Christian neighbors are often invited to share in the feast, and the tradition of giving meat to non-Muslim neighbors reinforces social cohesion. Children wear new clothes and receive gifts, and parks and recreational areas bustle with celebrating families.

One of the two holiest Islamic festivals, commemorating Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son as commanded by God, marked by animal sacrifice, communal prayers, and sharing meat with the poor.
