India's New Year's Day on January 1st is widely celebrated in urban areas, though India also observes multiple regional new years on different dates throughout the year: Ugadi, Gudi Padwa, Puthandu, Vishu, and Baisakhi among them. The Gregorian New Year is most exuberantly celebrated in metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Goa.

Goa is India's New Year's capital. The former Portuguese colony's beaches host massive parties, electronic music festivals, and fireworks displays that attract both domestic and international tourists. Mumbai's Marine Drive and Gateway of India area fill with revellers, while Bangalore's MG Road and Brigade Road become pedestrian party zones.

Food on New Year's Day varies enormously by region and community. North Indian families might prepare a festive meal with biryani, kebabs, and kheer. South Indian Christians may serve appam and stew. In Bengal, families visit friends and share mishti (sweets). The diversity of India means there is no single national tradition, but the spirit of optimism and new beginnings is universal.

Many Indians visit temples, churches, mosques, or gurudwaras on January 1st to seek blessings for the year ahead. Corporate offices often organize New Year celebrations in the last week of December, and January 1st itself is a public holiday in most states.
