New Year's Day(元旦) 在 南非

当地问候语: Gelukkige Nuwe Jaar! / Happy New Year!

New Year's Day in South Africa falls at the height of summer and is celebrated outdoors. Beaches from Durban's Golden Mile to Cape Town's Camps Bay fill with families and groups enjoying braais (barbecues), swimming, and live music. The Cape Town Minstrel Carnival (Kaapse Klopse), held on January 2nd (Tweede Nuwe Jaar or Second New Year), is one of the most distinctive New Year's traditions anywhere in the world.

The Kaapse Klopse dates back to the early 19th century and features troupes of minstrels in brightly coloured satin suits, painted faces, and straw hats parading through the streets of central Cape Town playing banjos, guitars, and ghoema drums. The tradition has roots in the Cape Malay community and the emancipation celebrations of enslaved people.

New Year's Eve parties across the country range from sophisticated hotel galas in Johannesburg's Sandton district to community street parties in townships. Fireworks displays light up the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town and Durban's beachfront.

The traditional braai on New Year's Day features boerewors (coiled sausage), sosaties (marinated meat skewers), lamb chops, mielies (corn on the cob), and pap (maize porridge). South Africans of all backgrounds come together in a spirit of ubuntu, and the phrase 'Voorspoedige Nuwe Jaar' echoes alongside English and indigenous language greetings.
