While Thailand's traditional New Year is Songkran in April, the Gregorian New Year on January 1st (Wan Khuen Pi Mai) is also widely celebrated, especially in Bangkok and tourist areas. The government designates it as a public holiday, and countdown events at CentralWorld in Bangkok draw hundreds of thousands of revellers.

Thai New Year's Day customs blend Buddhist traditions with modern celebrations. Many Thais visit temples in the morning to make merit (tam bun) by offering food to monks, releasing birds or fish, and making donations. This spiritual start to the year is followed by family gatherings and festive meals.

Food plays an important role, with families sharing dishes like khao man gai (chicken rice), som tam (papaya salad), and elaborate desserts. Many restaurants and hotels offer special New Year's brunch buffets featuring both Thai and international cuisine.

Thailand's beach resorts in Phuket, Koh Samui, and Pattaya host massive New Year's parties that attract international tourists. Lantern releases, though increasingly regulated for environmental and aviation safety reasons, remain a popular way to symbolically send wishes skyward. The Thai royal family traditionally issues New Year's blessings to the nation.
