La Notte di San Silvestro (Saint Sylvester's Night) in Italy is a celebration built around food, fireworks, and superstition. The cenone (grand dinner) on December 31st is one of the most important meals of the year, rivalling Christmas Eve's Feast of the Seven Fishes in significance.

The meal varies by region but typically begins with antipasti of cured meats and cheeses, proceeds through pasta (often stuffed tortellini in brodo in Emilia-Romagna or seafood pasta in the south), and culminates in lenticchie con cotechino (lentils with pork sausage), which is eaten at midnight for prosperity.

Wearing red underwear (biancheria rossa) is virtually universal in Italy on New Year's Eve, believed to bring good luck and love. Lingerie shops do their briskest business of the year in the final days of December. In Naples, the old tradition of throwing unwanted objects out of windows at midnight has been officially discouraged but still echoes in more symbolic gestures.

Major celebrations take place in Rome's Piazza del Popolo, Naples' waterfront, and Milan's Piazza Duomo. Fireworks over the Bay of Naples and Rome's Colosseum are spectacular. Italian television broadcasts Concerto di Capodanno performances from La Fenice in Venice and other theatres, and the party atmosphere in the piazzas continues until dawn.

The last day of the Gregorian calendar year, celebrated worldwide with countdown parties, fireworks, and midnight toasts welcoming the new year.
