Ramadan in Turkey, known as Ramazan, blends Ottoman-era traditions with modern Turkish culture to create a distinctive observance. Turkish cities, particularly Istanbul, take on a magical quality during the holy month, with historic mosques illuminated by mahya, messages strung in lights between minarets, a tradition unique to Turkey.

The iftar experience in Turkey is centered on communal gathering. Municipalities across the country set up enormous iftar tents that serve free meals to thousands each evening. The tradition of the iftar topu, a cannon fired to signal the breaking of the fast, continues in Istanbul and other cities. Families and friends gather for iftar meals that begin with dates and olives, followed by soups like mercimek (lentil) or tarhana, and main courses of pide (Ramadan flatbread), kebabs, and stews.

Ramazan pidesi, a special round flatbread baked only during the holy month, is perhaps the most beloved Ramadan food in Turkey. Long queues form at bakeries each afternoon, and the sight and smell of fresh pide is synonymous with Turkish Ramadan. Gullaç, a dessert of rose-water-soaked pastry layers with pomegranate seeds and walnuts, is the traditional Ramadan sweet.

The drumming of the davulcu, a Ramadan drummer who walks through neighborhoods before dawn, echoes the Egyptian mesaharati tradition. Istanbul's Sultanahmet Square hosts a month-long Ramadan festival with cultural events, traditional crafts, and entertainment.

The ninth month of the Islamic calendar observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community, with abstinence from food and drink from dawn to sunset.
