Rosh Hashanah in the United States is one of the most widely observed Jewish holidays, marking the Jewish New Year with two days of prayer, family gatherings, and symbolic foods. Synagogues see their second-highest attendance of the year, after Yom Kippur, and many American Jews who do not regularly attend services make a point of going for the High Holidays.

The sounding of the shofar during morning services is the dramatic centerpiece of the Rosh Hashanah liturgy. Many synagogues require tickets for High Holiday services due to the enormous demand. The Tashlich ceremony, where sins are symbolically cast into water, draws communities to rivers, lakes, and ocean shores across the country, from the Hudson River in New York to the Pacific beaches of Los Angeles.

American Rosh Hashanah dinners are festive family affairs. Apples dipped in honey, round challah, tzimmes (a sweet carrot stew), brisket, and honey cake are staples of Ashkenazi tables. Sephardic families add their own symbolic foods. Many American Jews send New Year cards and share honey cake with coworkers and non-Jewish friends, making the tradition accessible beyond the Jewish community.

Schools in areas with significant Jewish populations often close for Rosh Hashanah, and many employers provide flexible scheduling. The holiday falls in September or October, overlapping with the American back-to-school season, and for Jewish American families, it marks the true beginning of the new year more than January 1st.
