Lá Fhéile Pádraig(圣帕特里克节) 在 美国
当地问候语: Happy St. Patrick's Day
Saint Patrick's Day in the United States is arguably a bigger celebration than in Ireland itself, fueled by the enormous Irish-American diaspora of over 30 million people who claim Irish ancestry. The holiday has transcended its ethnic origins to become a broadly celebrated American event where, as the saying goes, everyone is Irish on March 17.
The tradition of dyeing the Chicago River emerald green began in 1962 and has become one of the most iconic St Patrick's Day images in the world. The New York City St Patrick's Day Parade, dating back to 1762, is the oldest and largest in the world, with over 150,000 marchers and two million spectators lining Fifth Avenue. Boston, Savannah, and Philadelphia also host massive parades that reflect their deep Irish-American communities.
American celebrations center on Irish-themed food and drink. Corned beef and cabbage, while not actually a traditional Irish dish but an Irish-American adaptation, is the standard holiday meal. Irish pubs and bars across the country overflow with patrons drinking green beer, Guinness, and Irish whiskey. The economic impact is enormous, with over 13 million pints of Guinness consumed in the US on March 17, more than double the daily average.
Green is everywhere on St Patrick's Day in America. People wear green clothing, accessories, and face paint. Buildings, fountains, and landmarks are illuminated in green. Even food and beverages are dyed green, from bagels and pizza to milkshakes. Those not wearing green risk getting pinched, a playful American tradition with no clear origin. The holiday has become so commercially significant that marketing campaigns begin weeks in advance, with shamrock-adorned products filling store shelves.
