On December 5, the eve of Saint Nicholas Day, Krampus, a fearsome horned figure, roams the streets in elaborate parades to frighten naughty children, while the Nikolaus rewards the good ones with small gifts.

Heiliger Abend (Christmas Eve) is the pinnacle of the season. On Christmas Day and December 26 (Stefanitag), families continue celebrating with visits to relatives and hearty meals. Attending a Christmas concert, particularly in Salzburg where Mozart's legacy looms large, is a cherished tradition.
