Austria, the birthplace of Silent Night, takes Christmas seriously. The holiday season begins with Advent, and the four Sundays before Christmas are marked by lighting candles on the Adventkranz. On December 5, the eve of Saint Nicholas Day, Krampus, a fearsome horned figure, roams the streets in elaborate parades to frighten naughty children, while the Nikolaus rewards the good ones with small gifts.

Heiliger Abend (Christmas Eve) is the pinnacle of the season. Families gather for a meal that often includes fried carp or Wiener Schnitzel, followed by Vanillekipferl (vanilla crescent cookies) and Linzer Augen (jam-filled cookies). After dinner, a bell is rung to announce that the Christkind (Christ Child) has arrived and decorated the tree and left presents. The tree is often adorned with real candles, straw stars, and delicate glass ornaments.

Austria's Christmas markets, particularly the Christkindlmarkt in Vienna's Rathausplatz and Salzburg's Domplatz, are world-renowned. They sell Punsch (hot fruit punch), Maroni (roasted chestnuts), Lebkuchen, and handcrafted wooden ornaments from the Tyrolean Alps.

On Christmas Day and December 26 (Stefanitag), families continue celebrating with visits to relatives and hearty meals. Attending a Christmas concert, particularly in Salzburg where Mozart's legacy looms large, is a cherished tradition.
