Ascension of Jesus(Ascension) en Norvège
Salutation locale: God Kristi himmelfartsdag
Ascension Day in Norway, known as Kristi himmelfartsdag, is a national public holiday that falls on a Thursday forty days after Easter. The holiday is cherished for creating a long weekend opportunity, as many Norwegians take the intervening Friday as an inneklemtdag (squeezed day) to enjoy a four-day break.
Norwegian churches hold special services, with some congregations gathering on hilltops or elevated locations to symbolize Christ's ascent. However, for most Norwegians, the day is associated with the joy of late spring and the outdoors rather than religious observance.
The timing of Kristi himmelfartsdag in late May or early June places it at the peak of the Norwegian spring. The mountains are shedding their snow cover, wildflowers bloom in meadows, and the long Scandinavian days provide ample daylight for outdoor activities. Hiking, fishing, and cabin trips are the most popular ways to spend the weekend.
In northern Norway, the holiday can fall during the period of the midnight sun, adding a magical quality to the celebration. In the south, it marks prime time for sailing in the Oslo Fjord and along the southern coast. Norwegian families enjoy grilled salmon, new potatoes, and fresh salads. The weekend is also popular for home improvement and gardening, as the frost-free growing season is finally underway in most of the country.
