Salutation locale: Gantantra Diwas ki shubhkamnayein

Republic Day on January 26 celebrates the date in 1950 when the Constitution of India came into effect, completing the country's transition from a British dominion to a sovereign republic. The holiday is one of India's three national holidays, alongside Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti, and is marked by the most elaborate ceremonial display in the country.

The Republic Day Parade along Rajpath, now known as Kartavya Path, in New Delhi is the highlight of celebrations. The parade begins with the President of India arriving in a ceremonial horse-drawn carriage and unfurling the national flag. The military displays include marching contingents from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, followed by tanks, missiles, and other military hardware. The flypast by Indian Air Force jets, including formations trailing the Indian tricolor in smoke, provides a dramatic conclusion.

Perhaps the most beloved segment of the parade is the tableaux, elaborate floats presented by each state and union territory showcasing their unique cultural heritage, traditions, and achievements. These meticulously crafted displays feature traditional dance groups, architectural replicas, and cultural themes, providing a visual tour of India's extraordinary diversity. Children from across the country, selected as National Bravery Award winners, ride on elephant or vehicle-mounted platforms.

Republic Day celebrations extend well beyond Delhi. State capitals host their own parades with gubernatorial flag hoisting. Schools organize flag ceremonies, patriotic songs, and cultural programs. The Beating Retreat ceremony on January 29, held at Vijay Chowk near Parliament, marks the end of the Republic Day celebrations with a spectacular display of military band performances as the sun sets. The three-day celebration period fills New Delhi with patriotic fervor and cultural pride.
