All Saints' Day on November 1st, Dia de Todos os Santos, is a national public holiday in Portugal observed with cemetery visits, family gatherings, and traditional foods. The Portuguese approach to honoring the dead reflects the country's deep Catholic roots and strong family bonds.

Portuguese families visit cemeteries to tend graves, light candles, and place flowers, predominantly chrysanthemums, on the resting places of their loved ones. The visits are often multigenerational, with grandparents telling grandchildren about departed family members. In rural Portugal, the entire village may gather at the local cemetery.

The traditional Portuguese All Saints' food is the castanha, roasted chestnut, sold by street vendors and prepared at home. The Magusto, a chestnut roasting festival, is associated with this period, particularly in northern Portugal and the islands. Bolinhos de Pinhao, pine nut cookies, and pao-por-deus, a tradition where children go door to door asking for bread, fruit, and sweets, survive in some regions.

Churches hold special Masses, and the following day, Dia dos Fieis Defuntos (All Souls' Day), continues the focus on remembering the dead.
