Portuguese families visit cemeteries to tend graves, light candles, and place flowers, predominantly chrysanthemums, on the resting places of their loved ones. The visits are often multigenerational, with grandparents telling grandchildren about departed family members. In rural Portugal, the entire village may gather at the local cemetery.

The traditional Portuguese All Saints' food is the castanha, roasted chestnut, sold by street vendors and prepared at home.
