In Ireland, December 26 is known as Saint Stephen's Day, or La Fheile Stiofain, and it is a public holiday with its own distinct traditions separate from Christmas Day. The most iconic tradition is the Wren Boys, or Wren Day, rooted in a custom that dates back centuries.

Groups of people, often young men and children, dress in straw suits, masks, and colorful costumes and go door to door carrying a pole with a fake wren (historically a real one). They sing the Wren Song, play music, and perform dances in exchange for money, which was traditionally used to fund a community dance. The town of Dingle in County Kerry is famous for its particularly vibrant Wren Day celebration, with hundreds of costumed participants parading through the streets.

Saint Stephen's Day is also a major day for horse racing in Ireland. The Leopardstown Christmas Festival, held over four days starting on December 26, is one of the most prestigious race meetings in the Irish calendar and draws large crowds. It is a social event as much as a sporting one, with attendees dressing up despite the winter weather.

For families, Saint Stephen's Day is a day for visiting, walking, and eating leftovers. Cold turkey sandwiches and reheated Christmas dinner are standard. Many Irish pubs reopen after being closed on Christmas Day, and the social atmosphere is warm and convivial.
