Good Friday in Nigeria is a national public holiday observed by the country's substantial Christian population, which makes up roughly half of Africa's most populous nation. Churches across southern and central Nigeria hold hours-long services featuring dramatic readings of the Passion, hymns in Igbo, Yoruba, and English, and prayers of intercession.

In many Nigerian churches, Good Friday services are deeply emotional affairs. Congregants dress in somber black or red clothing, and some churches drape their crosses and pulpits in black cloth. Pentecostal and Charismatic churches often hold all-night prayer vigils from Thursday into Friday, while Catholic parishes perform the Stations of the Cross with full processional drama.

The tradition of fasting and abstaining from meat is widely observed. Families eat fish-based meals, with fried fish, fish pepper soup, and grilled tilapia being common choices. In coastal cities like Lagos and Calabar, fresh seafood is abundant, while inland communities rely on dried fish and stockfish. Plantain, yam, and rice serve as accompaniments.

In states like Anambra and Enugu, communities stage elaborate passion plays in open fields and church compounds. Youth groups reenact the crucifixion with costumes and props, drawing large crowds. The day is also a time for charity, with many churches organizing food drives and outreach to the poor in keeping with the spirit of sacrifice.
