Good Friday in Nigeria is a national public holiday observed by the country's substantial Christian population, which makes up roughly half of Africa's most populous nation. In many Nigerian churches, Good Friday services are deeply emotional affairs. Congregants dress in somber black or red clothing, and some churches drape their crosses and pulpits in black cloth. In states like Anambra and Enugu, communities stage elaborate passion plays in open fields and church compounds. Youth groups reenact the crucifixion with costumes and props, drawing large crowds. The day is also a time for charity, with many churches organizing food drives and outreach to the poor in keeping with the spirit of sacrifice.
