Ramadan in Indonesia, called Bulan Puasa or Bulan Ramadan, is observed by the world's largest Muslim population with deep devotion and distinctly Indonesian cultural traditions. The holy month permeates every aspect of daily life in the archipelago, from the call to prayer echoing from hundreds of thousands of mosques to the bustling takjil markets that spring up each afternoon.

The tradition of ngabuburit, spending the late afternoon out and about waiting for iftar, sees streets and parks filling with families and young people. Takjil vendors sell colorful drinks, kolak (bananas and sweet potatoes in coconut milk), gorengan (fried snacks), and es buah (fruit ice) for breaking the fast. The moment of iftar, signaled by the Maghrib prayer call, brings a communal pause as millions break their fast simultaneously.

Indonesian mosques host Tarawih prayers each night, and the recitation of the Quran is accompanied by bedug drums and the gamelan-influenced call to prayer unique to Java. Pesantren, Islamic boarding schools, hold intensive Quran study programs, and religious lectures draw large audiences.

The cultural traditions vary across the archipelago. In Java, the tradition of Megengan marks the start of Ramadan with communal prayers at ancestors' graves. In Aceh, the strictest observance prevails. The month builds toward the mudik exodus as Ramadan's end approaches, with tens of millions preparing to journey home for Lebaran.
