Semana Santa, Holy Week, is the defining cultural and religious event in Spain, with Easter Sunday marking its triumphant conclusion. Throughout the preceding week, cities and towns across Spain host processions of breathtaking scale and solemnity. Brotherhoods, or cofradias, carry enormous pasos, ornate floats depicting scenes from the Passion, through candlelit streets.

Seville's Semana Santa is the most famous, drawing over a million visitors. Nazarenos in pointed capirotes and flowing robes accompany the floats while saetas, mournful flamenco hymns, are sung from balconies. Malaga, Valladolid, and Zamora each have their own distinctive processional traditions, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Easter Sunday itself, called Domingo de Resurreccion, brings a shift from solemnity to joy. Families gather for a festive meal of roast lamb or seafood. Torrijas, slices of bread soaked in milk and honey then fried and dusted with cinnamon, are the quintessential Easter dessert. Mona de Pascua, a decorated cake often topped with chocolate eggs, is traditional in Catalonia and Valencia.

In towns across Aragon and Castilla, the Rompida de la Hora sees drummers gather in town squares on Good Friday to play in thunderous unison until their drumsticks break and their hands bleed, a visceral expression of collective devotion.
