Ramadan in Egypt is perhaps the most culturally distinctive observance of the holy month in the entire Muslim world. Egyptian Ramadan has a unique character shaped by centuries of tradition, and the month is anticipated with extraordinary enthusiasm. The fanous, a colorful lantern, is the symbol of Egyptian Ramadan, and these lanterns appear in every street, shop window, and home.

The sound of the mesaharati, a drummer who walks through neighborhoods before dawn beating his drum and calling the faithful to suhoor, the pre-dawn meal, is a cherished tradition that persists in many Egyptian neighborhoods despite modern alarm clocks. The cannon of Ramadan, fired from the Citadel in Cairo, marks iftar with a boom that echoes across the city.

Egyptian iftar begins with dates, apricot juice (qamar al-din), and a hearty soup, followed by dishes like molokhia, mahshi (stuffed vegetables), fattah, and grilled meats. Egyptian television produces its most anticipated shows for Ramadan, with families binge-watching mosalsalat (serialized dramas) that premiere exclusively during the month. The streets come alive after iftar with socializing, shopping, and entertainment that continues deep into the night.
