The Mid-Autumn Festival in Taiwan, celebrated on the 15th of the eighth lunar month, has developed unique local traditions that distinguish it from mainland Chinese celebrations. The most distinctive Taiwanese addition to the festival is the outdoor barbecue, a tradition that emerged in the late 1980s largely due to a successful barbecue sauce advertising campaign and has since become synonymous with the holiday on the island.

On Mid-Autumn Festival evening, parks, riverside areas, and streets across Taiwan fill with the smoke and aroma of outdoor grills as families, friends, and neighbors gather for communal barbecues. Taiwanese grilling favorites include pork slices, corn, clams, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, and various vegetables, brushed with the distinctive sweet soy-based barbecue sauce. The social aspect of grilling together has made this tradition incredibly popular, transforming the holiday into Taiwan's version of an outdoor cookout.

Mooncakes remain an important element, though Taiwanese mooncakes have their own character. The most beloved Taiwanese mooncake variety is the lu rou or braised pork mooncake, with a flaky layered crust. Pomelos, the large citrus fruit in season during autumn, are central to the celebration. Children and adults alike make pomelo peel hats, wearing the rind on their heads for fun. The pomelo symbolizes family unity and good fortune.

Moon gazing, lantern lighting, and family gatherings continue the deeper traditions of the festival. Many Taiwanese also visit temples to pray and give thanks during the holiday. The festival creates a three-day public holiday weekend, and travel within Taiwan surges as families reunite. Department stores and bakeries compete with creative mooncake offerings, from traditional to fusion flavors, making the weeks before the festival a season of elaborate gift-giving and culinary experimentation.
