The Mid-Autumn Festival in Taiwan, celebrated on the 15th of the eighth lunar month, has developed unique local traditions that distinguish it from mainland Chinese celebrations. Taiwanese grilling favorites include pork slices, corn, clams, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, and various vegetables, brushed with the distinctive sweet soy-based barbecue sauce. The festival creates a three-day public holiday weekend, and travel within Taiwan surges as families reunite. Department stores and bakeries compete with creative mooncake offerings, from traditional to fusion flavors, making the weeks before the festival a season of elaborate gift-giving and culinary experimentation.
